“Dear Rev. Malkmus, I recently attended your ‘first Saturday-of-the-Month’ seminar in Shelby. Before the seminar began, and while others were sharing their incredible healing experiences after adopting The Hallelujah Diet, there was a lady in her 70s who shared how as a result of dying her hair she had developed cystitis, a bladder infection. She then went on to share how after she stopped dying her hair and after adopting The Hallelujah Diet, she was able to overcome the cystitis. She then gave a warning to other ladies present, encouraging them to overcome their vanity. Could you share more concerning this issue?”
Hi Marie, Back in the 1980s I was an insurance agent with the National Association of Self Employed. The policy I sold was a health and life insurance policy designed specifically for small business owners and their employees. I visited about 30 business owners a week, for five years, in all kinds of businesses.
When I first started selling the policy, there were no restrictions on the type of businesses that I could solicit. But my personal experience was that whenever I went into a hair or nail salon, the toxic fumes from the chemicals being used would cause me great personal concern for my own health.
About a year after I began selling that health insurance policy, the company sent out a directive telling all agents that we could no longer write a health or life insurance policy to any owner or employee of these salons. Why? Because those people were now classified as “high risk.”
Ever since that experience and after much research, I have been discouraging men, but especially women from dying their hair because these dyes (chemicals) are hazardous to their health. Below I share some to the health problems these toxic chemical dyes can cause:
Bladder Problems – Cystitis is an infection of the bladder which can cause inflammation and tissue damage, as well as blood in urine, urinary urgency, burning while urinating, strong-smelling urine, and pressure. This infection can be caused by bacterial organisms, while non-infectious cystitis can be caused by drugs, medical treatments, and medical treatments…as well as chemicals (hair dyes).
Hair Loss – According to the FDA, women that have used hair dyes have reported incidences of hair loss. The chemicals in the dye may damage the hair and cause strands to fall out.
Allergic Reaction – Allergic reactions to hair dyes can include rashes, swelling, severe burning sensations on the scalp, and facial swelling.
Link to Cancer – A connection between bladder cancer and hair coloring chemicals was found during a 2001 study performed at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. The findings were that women who used hair dye at least once a month or longer were twice as likely to get bladder cancer compared to women who did not dye their hair.
Natural Hair Dyes – Hair dyes marketed as ‘natural’ typically do not contain resorcinol, ammonia or peroxide. However they still do contain at least some PPD, just lower levels. Obviously this is better, but using these dyes does not completely remove the risks.
Risks Associated with ALL Hair Dyes – Skin reactions are a real risk and can be life-threatening. They are something that could happen to anyone who uses hair dyes, either natural or chemical. Severe allergic reactions, causing swelling, breathing problems and skin reactions, are another real risk. And finally, damage to hair is yet another genuine risk, resulting in your hair becoming brittle and damaged.
Any substance placed on the exterior (skin) of body penetrates the skin and is drawn into the body where it enters the blood stream. The Bible tells us that the “…life of the flesh is in the blood….” (Leviticus 17:11). If we want to experience the ultimate health God has designed for our bodies, we must keep that precious blood flowing through our bodies just as pure as possible.
God has made each of us the guardian of our own health, and responsible for the outcome. It is every person’s choice whether or not to accept these risks and dye their hair. However, if you are a hair stylist, there is a real risk that you will suffer some kind of health problem due to hair dye exposure.
If we desire health, we must stand guard and prevent any toxic substance entering it by way of the skin, the mouth, the nasal, or injection.
“I beseech YOU therefore Brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present YOUR bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is YOUR reasonable service. AND BE NOT CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what I that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)
The color of our hair was God’s choice for each of us. Let’s be satisfied with His selection. And please don’t forget what the Bible warns us in Galatians 6:7; that we will reap whatever we sow! This is an irreversible law established by God!
“Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man (or woman) soweth, that shall he (or she) also reap.”
