Can Dying Your Hair Be Dangerous To Your Health?

“Dear Rev. Malkmus, I recently attended your ‘first Saturday-of-the-Month’ seminar in Shelby. Before the seminar began, and while others were sharing their incredible healing experiences after adopting The Hallelujah Diet, there was a lady in her 70s who shared how as a result of dying her hair she had developed cystitis, a bladder infection. She then went on to share how after she stopped dying her hair and after adopting The Hallelujah Diet, she was able to overcome the cystitis. She then gave a warning to other ladies present, encouraging them to overcome their vanity. Could you share more concerning this issue?”

Hi Marie, Back in the 1980s I was an insurance agent with the National Association of Self Employed. The policy I sold was a health and life insurance policy designed specifically for small business owners and their employees. I visited about 30 business owners a week, for five years, in all kinds of businesses.

When I first started selling the policy, there were no restrictions on the type of businesses that I could solicit. But my personal experience was that whenever I went into a hair or nail salon, the toxic fumes from the chemicals being used would cause me great personal concern for my own health.

About a year after I began selling that health insurance policy, the company sent out a directive telling all agents that we could no longer write a health or life insurance policy to any owner or employee of these salons. Why? Because those people were now classified as “high risk.”

Ever since that experience and after much research, I have been discouraging men, but especially women from dying their hair because these dyes (chemicals) are hazardous to their health. Below I share some to the health problems these toxic chemical dyes can cause:

Bladder Problems – Cystitis is an infection of the bladder which can cause inflammation and tissue damage, as well as blood in urine, urinary urgency, burning while urinating, strong-smelling urine, and pressure. This infection can be caused by bacterial organisms, while non-infectious cystitis can be caused by drugs, medical treatments, and medical treatments…as well as chemicals (hair dyes).

Hair Loss – According to the FDA, women that have used hair dyes have reported incidences of hair loss. The chemicals in the dye may damage the hair and cause strands to fall out.

Allergic Reaction – Allergic reactions to hair dyes can include rashes, swelling, severe burning sensations on the scalp, and facial swelling.

Link to Cancer – A connection between bladder cancer and hair coloring chemicals was found during a 2001 study performed at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. The findings were that women who used hair dye at least once a month or longer were twice as likely to get bladder cancer compared to women who did not dye their hair.

Natural Hair Dyes – Hair dyes marketed as ‘natural’ typically do not contain resorcinol, ammonia or peroxide. However they still do contain at least some PPD, just lower levels. Obviously this is better, but using these dyes does not completely remove the risks.

Risks Associated with ALL Hair Dyes – Skin reactions are a real risk and can be life-threatening. They are something that could happen to anyone who uses hair dyes, either natural or chemical. Severe allergic reactions, causing swelling, breathing problems and skin reactions, are another real risk. And finally, damage to hair is yet another genuine risk, resulting in your hair becoming brittle and damaged.

Conclusion

Any substance placed on the exterior (skin) of body penetrates the skin and is drawn into the body where it enters the blood stream. The Bible tells us that the “…life of the flesh is in the blood….” (Leviticus 17:11). If we want to experience the ultimate health God has designed for our bodies, we must keep that precious blood flowing through our bodies just as pure as possible.

God has made each of us the guardian of our own health, and responsible for the outcome. It is every person’s choice whether or not to accept these risks and dye their hair. However, if you are a hair stylist, there is a real risk that you will suffer some kind of health problem due to hair dye exposure.

If we desire health, we must stand guard and prevent any toxic substance entering it by way of the skin, the mouth, the nasal, or injection.

“I beseech YOU therefore Brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present YOUR bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is YOUR reasonable service. AND BE NOT CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that ye may prove what I that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)

The color of our hair was God’s choice for each of us. Let’s be satisfied with His selection. And please don’t forget what the Bible warns us in Galatians 6:7; that we will reap whatever we sow! This is an irreversible law established by God!

“Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man (or woman) soweth, that shall he (or she) also reap.”

Isn’t it ironic that they provide gloves with the home packs of dye so that you won’t get the chemicals leaching into your hands but it is perfectly ok to plonk those same carcinogenic chemicals on your head?

Personally I believe that businesses that use chemicals that are obviously dangerous (if you choke on the fumes and it irritates the eyes it just can’t be good for you, now can ti?) should be taken to court and shut down. That’d kill the vanity business pretty quick smart.

Remember, this is an industry you want to shut down. My job relies on people coloring their hair. I hope you are equally as concerned about labeling GMO’S as you are about shutting down the beauty industry…I also hope you vote for clean energy and ride a bike to work. Oh how I love listening to the rants of a hypocrite. How “pretty quick smart” of you.

      • Uhm, no, it’s not the industry I want to shut down. It is the manufacturers of toxic chemicals who con, mostly women, to put the stuff into their skin.

If your job relies on people colouring their hair then get the industry to clean up its act.

And, as for your label “beauty industry” well shouldn’t that read the Great Big Lie industry? After all, isn’t it all about pretending to be something that you in fact are not?

One of the most beautiful women I know is not pretty. But she is beautiful. And, she never wears makeup. What you see is what you get.

        For the record:
1 I believe all GMO’s should be banned and those companies involved confiscated by Governments and their assets distributed to the general population as compensation for wrongs done.
2 Yes I vote for clean energy. Fortunately we don’t have Nuclear Power plants in NZ, even though our ShonKey Prime Minister wouldn’t be averse to them.
3 Nope, don’t ride a bike to work. Can’t ride a bike. Have inner ear problems which precludes that.

Question: Why am I a hypocrite? I’ve told it like it is. Just because you don’t like the message is no reason to shoot the messenger.

    • Are you a man?

      • Yes I am. And… I have held out, much to my wife’s chagrin, from dyeing my hair. You see, I don’t want to get cancer of any sort. Certainly not for vanity’s sake.

Gads, I’ve had some women say I look “sexy” with my (then) salt and pepper hair. Now, it is simply salt… LOL

any herbal hair combination with catalase will reverse much gray hair

  3. Much of what causes cancer is the body not having a strong immune system. The body gets one new cancer cell per day. If people eat GMO based foods (diseased animals forced into slaughter) or Monsanto’s 11,000 seed patents that design the chemicals into the DNA of the seeds, they will have a tendency towards a weak immune system and ALL types of disease. I figure if an insect won’t eat the plant, why should I? These GMO’s are transfered into the animals bodies prior to slaughter and they are shot with anti-biotics to sustain their lives until they are brutally killed.

Personally, as a hair designer, I’ll take my chances working in a salon on a Vegan lifestyle rather than intake all of the crap people in this country put in their bodies daily. Thank you Monsanto and our government. By the way, GMO foods are banned in Europe.

So, you’d be happy to take your chances with the chemicals in hair dyes?

Consider this. In the 1970’s statistics showed that the number of women who had spontaneous abortions, deformed babies, or carried to term dead babies was exponentially higher amongst women’s hairdressers than that of women who worked in the poorly regulated and dangerous environment of the largely unregulated Nuclear Power industry. This time period is before it was cleaned up because of the expose from Karen Silkwood’s death and subsequent discovery of massive plutonium contamination.

Chemicals used as hair dyes and for other treatments have largely remained unchanged.

That tells me more than I need to know…

  4. this is amazing information. I have been usiing a henna for 10 years. I decided to use an organic hair color. I never put this info with bladder infections. I have had two lately. I will go back to Hennna real soon.

  5. Hair dye is so dangerous! Using organic henna is a better alternative, although you really have to be on the look out for healthy henna! The boxed henna hair dyes are really harmful as well. There are a lot of added ingredients that are harmful to your body. There’s a really good blog about this that I read once. http://healthydirt.weebly.com/1/post/2013/01/dont-dye-for-your-hair.html

  6. ummm, bye! Disgusting article! religion is ridiculous, and false, and SOOO outdated! get educated! All the talk about religion in this article makes me basically discredit the science facts you may have included in the article. EWWW!! I just realized that this whole site is religious, and founded by a reverend, what is that?! watch out! BYE! Religion is wrong for so many reasons. It is hateful, and even if it wasn’t again it just isn’t real. I suppose you would also believe in the tooth fairy and Santa clause? ..because that is the same as believing in religion and god. and i bet this site is from the united states of america… the most progressive and best country in the world (that was sarcasm) Very classy article!
