For most of us, what we eat has been dictated to us by outside sources.
The first people to program our eating habits are our parents when we are children and they control our diets. Later, we become programmed by what others eat, influenced by what could be considered a kind of food “peer pressure.”
As our eating habits develop, even more programming is embedded through advertisements we’ve been exposed to or our own taste buds which have, themselves, been programmed by manufacturers to seek high salt, sugar, and fat.
If we are honest with ourselves, most of us will admit that we haven’t given much consideration to what we have been eating throughout most of our lives. Consequently, that absence of mindfulness has taken a terrible toll.
Proper Fuel for Your Car
Would you ever consider putting a low grade fuel or contaminated fuel into your vehicle?
Like most people, I’m sure that you would not!
And why not? Why do you choose high quality fuel for your car?
I believe most people who drive an automobile realize that using a low grade fuel would cause it to ping and knock, and that putting contaminated fuel into the vehicle might cause it to stop running altogether.
How do we know this about our automobile? Possibly, we have experienced some of these negative consequences when we inadvertently introduced the wrong fuel into our own automobile, or we learned it by reading the owner’s manual, or hearing it from others who shared their negative experiences.
Proper Fuel for Your Body
It saddens me that most people know more, and seem to care more, about the fuel they place in their automobiles then they do about the fuel they place in their own beautiful, God-made, physical bodies. And yet, just as much as proper fuel determines how well our cars run, proper fuel determines just how well our bodies run.
That was certainly the case in my life.
I filled my body with contaminated fuel right up until the age of 42 (1976), when I was told I had colon cancer.
So I am not here to criticize or condemn or to pass judgment on anyone because I have already been down that road – a road that led me to some serious physical problems, and a road I trust you will avoid at all cost.
Why did I travel such a road? The Bible gives us a very clear answer in the following verse:
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
~ Hosea 4:6
When I learned that I had colon cancer, I learned something else, too. I learned that there was another way; yes a better way, to fuel (nourish) my body than the way I had been fueling it.
Based on my newly found knowledge, I changed what I ate (my fuel) and almost immediately started to get well.
In fact, within one year from the time I changed what I ate and started exercising, every single physical problem I was experiencing, prior to making that diet change, had gone away, including the cancer.
On this new fuel, I have enjoyed near perfect health for nearly four decades. (I suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in 2001 due to stress, but because I was on a healthy, high octane fuel diet, my recovery was very rapid.)
Your Body’s Built-In Computer
Our brain is very similar to a computer in that both gather and process information.
And just like the computer that sits on top of your lap, the computer that sits on top of your shoulders retains everything it has ever had programmed into it, whether that information was accurate or inaccurate.
The human brain is a reservoir of everything we have thought, been taught, or experienced. Most of the information stored in our brain is good information, but most of us have also picked up some bad programming through the years, especially in the area of nutrition.
The Truth About Health
If we are going to change our eating habits, our diet change must be based on more than a “whim” or a “fancy” or even a “heartfelt desire.” It must be based on truth and fact. Jesus said…:
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free!”
~ John 8:32
And what is the truth that can free us from the burden of physical problems and health challenges? That truth is that God designed our physical bodies to run on a particular grade or octane of fuel. And God clearly articulated what that fuel was to be in the Bible.
“AND GOD SAID, Behold, I have given you every herb (vegetable) bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food (meat).”
~ Genesis 1:29
With these words, God tells us that the only fuel we should put into our bodies should come from the fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts that were found in His perfect garden.
Reprogramming Is Urgently Needed
Once we learn the truth as to what type of fuel our bodies were designed by God to be nourished with, the re-programming must begin – and that’s the hard part.
For whatever number of years we have been consuming the wrong fuel, our taste buds have become programmed, habituated, addicted to consuming that wrong fuel.
Changing an addiction is not easy.
In fact, the only way we can accomplish any permanent change in our eating habits is to re-program our brains.
The Bible puts it this way:
“And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing [reprogramming] of your mind.”
~ Romans 12:2
The only way I have been able to successfully “renew” [reprogram] my own brain in the area of diet and health has been through re-education. I’ve learned the truth about how God designed my physical body, how God intended that physical body to be nourished, and how deceptive Satan has been in deceiving me in the past.
When I first made this diet change in 1976, I did it at the recommendation of Evangelist Lester Roloff.
However, almost immediately after making the diet change, and at his suggestion, I started studying the subject for myself – and thus the reprogramming — the “renewing” — of my brain began.
As time went by, I was no longer eating differently just because Brother Roloff encouraged me to eat differently.
I changed my diet because what I learned doing my research had re-programmed my brain so I knew that it was the ideal way to eat if I wanted to restore my health and prevent future sickness.
If we are going to develop good eating habits and sustain those good eating habits over the long haul, we must reprogram our minds!
By doing this, we are able to take control of our bodies with our minds – rather than allowing our bodies (flesh) to continue to dictate our food choices, as has been the case for most of us throughout our lives.
Opening Your Mind to New Information
If you are going to be successful in changing your eating patterns, you must, at least in the beginning, spend some time every day exposing your mind to new information.
Just be certain that it is data that is in keeping with the way God designed our bodies to be fueled and in the new way of eating He desires for us.
Personally, I do not believe there has been a day in the past nearly 40 years that I have not read something in the area of nutrition. It wasn’t always easy…
When I first made the diet change in 1976 (and even 16 years later when Rhonda and I started Hallelujah Acres) there were very few resources available with regard to a healthy diet, and especially coming from a Christian perspective.
Without resources with which to reprogram the brain, it was difficult in those early days for people to understand why they needed to change their diet. In 1988, I wrote my first book, “Why Christians Get Sick.” This book has been an eye-opener and a challenge to many to consider a diet change. Over one million copies are now in print in several languages.
