A few weeks ago, I wrote a short article in which I shared how I am now growing my vegetables in grow boxes organically. There has been a lot of response to that article. Below I share one of those letters from Darlene along with my response, and a final response from Darlene. I trust some of the new information shared in these letters might be a help to others.
Dear Rev. Malkmus,
I just read about your using the Garden Box at your home in Florida. It was a very interesting article so I looked up the Garden Box and read all about it. I now want to order a few of these to start a deck garden but it seems they use regular fertilizer. How does one use these boxes and do so organically? I have not grown a garden in many years and never organically. Thank you!
Rev. Malkmus Responds
I fill my boxes with Vigoro Organic Potting Mix. One 1.5 cu. ft. bag fills a box with a little to spare. For fertilizer I use: Espoma Organic Garden Tone. Both are available in the garden section of my Home Depot. Regular soil does not work well in the boxes as it does not wick the water well and is too compacted for good root growth, that is why I use the Vigoro Organic Potting Mix. Happy Gardening to you! Let me know how your garden box garden turns out. I already have tomatoes and peppers setting fruit in my boxes here in Florida.
Thank you so much for this speedy reply. I have ordered 3 Grow Boxes to begin this year and have space for 3 more next year. I am so excited to finally get to grow a garden again!
Growing up we always had a huge, huge garden and mama would freeze and can all she could for the winter. Me and my sisters learned how to work in that garden and we are all good workers in everything we do to this day! (I am almost 60) So many wonderful memories came from every aspect of working in that garden and I do believe that it was in that garden that I began what has been a lifelong pursuit of knowing and serving God. How can one not think about God when you see the wonder of a little seed turning into a cabbage or a tomato or a watermelon?
Life has been busy and still is, so I am looking forward to growing things again in what looks to be an easy answer to gardening. Where I live in Arizona the soil is bad and we have much wildlife around looking for food. Sorry for them, but they won’t be able to reach it on my second-story deck! I’ll let you know how things go.
Thanks so much for all you do. You have helped so many people by teaching God’s original diet!
With love in Christ,

I do not own the companies or have any stock in the garden boxes I am recommending, but you can learn more about them at http://store.earthbox.com or www.agardenpatch.com. If you are already gardening in containers, or if you give these garden boxes a try, let me know how you like them and maybe we can have some future articles in this Health Tip regarding them.
