Did Psychotropic Drugs Cause The Colorado Massacre?

Could a ban on psychotropic drugs have prevented the Colorado massacre? And what role could diet have played? Rev. Malkmus explores some thought-provoking answers.

On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred at the Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of the film The Dark Night Rises. A gunman dressed in tactical clothing, set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12 and injuring 58 others. The sole suspect is James Eagan Holmes, who was arrested outside.

Editor Responds

Early the very next morning, when I first learned about the Aurora, Colorado massacre, the first words out of my mouth to Rhonda were: “What I want to know is: Was James Eagan Holmes on psychotropic drugs when he killed all those people?” Why would I even consider it being a drug issue at such a time as this? Because previous research on the part of this editor had revealed that in every school shooting from Columbine to Virginia Tech, the perpetrator was on psychotropic drugs. In fact, over four years ago, on January 22, 2008, I had written a Health Tip regarding psychotropic drugs and their dangers.

My Concern Confirmed

Well, it didn’t take long for me to have confirmation that I was probably right in blaming the Aurora massacre on those psychotropic drugs when I read this headline on July 28th: Colorado Shooting Suspect was Under Care of Threat-Assessment Psychiatrist”. Following are excerpts from the article:
“A former University of Colorado graduate student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in a shooting rampage at Denver-area Movie Theater last week was under the care of a psychiatrist who was part of a campus threat-assessment team. . . . . Mr. Holmes was a psychiatric patient of Dr. Fenton. . . . . Fenton, medical director for student mental health services at the University of Colorado-Denver Anschutz Medical Campus, provides medication and psychotherapy for grad students. . . . .”
Anyone who has seen on television pictures of the murderer in the court room following the incident saw for themselves the effect the drugs are still having on Mr. Holmes. Those scenes reveal Mr. Holmes sitting there in the courtroom like a zombie, obviously drugged, and looking unaware of what is transpiring around him.

What Does God Say About These Drugs?

In the Bible, Revelation 18:23 provides some very interesting words:
“. . . for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy SORCERIES were all nations deceived.”
A concordance will reveal that the word “sorceries” used here comes from the Greek word “PHARMAkia” which in today’s English would be translated “drugs”. It is from the word “PHARMAkia” we get the words pharmaceutical, pharmacy, and pharmacist. So what is the Bible telling us here in Revelation 18:23? It is telling us that these drugs are deceiving all nations. All drugs, whether doctor-prescribed or over-the-counter, are toxic poisons to the physical body and the mind! And with regard to these psychotropic drugs, they definitely poison the mind.

Some Politicians Want Us To "Ban The Guns"

Since the massacre, some politicians have used the incident to call for more gun control, but that for sure isn’t the answer. For instance, in Chicago where they have some of the toughest gun laws, nearly 300 people have been murdered by guns in the past year in spite of having some of the strictest gun control laws in the land. In fact, you will find that the more guns they take away from law-abiding citizens, the higher the crime rate. The criminal elements, who can always obtain guns, have no fear of robbing a population when they know the law abiding citizenry have been disarmed by gun legislation. Then there is the case of Kennesaw, Georgia, selected by Family Circle as one of America’s 10 Best Towns for families. In 1982, Kennesaw did the opposite of what most cities do. Not only did it not outlaw or restrict guns, but it passed a law requiring every head of household in town to own a handgun with exceptions for those with criminal records, religious objection, handicap, etc. The result? Contrary to predictions, the town did not see a rise in violence and crime plunged and has stayed low ever since. It’s obvious; when people are allowed to own guns to defend themselves, crime is low because criminals don’t like to be shot. For those of you who think we need to ban the guns, have you given any consideration to how this massacre could have been avoided if a law abiding citizen in that theater that night had been carrying a gun? They could have quickly put a stop to the massacre by shooting the perpetrator. In some parts of our country where the carrying of guns by law abiding citizens has been encouraged, gun crimes have almost become nonexistent. An armed citizenry is the only way the citizens can protect themselves.

Is There A Solution?

Some might ask “If banning guns isn’t the solution, what is?" My solution is: “BAN THE DRUGS and CHANGE THE DIETS.” The root cause of most physical ills along with psychological problems are caused initially by bad diet. Drugs do not help the problem, rather they exacerbate the problem. A change in diet and lifestyle and the banning of psychotropic drugs will go a long way to correct psychological problems and prevent these massacres. Sadly, this solution may never see the light of day because there is too much political power and financial loss by drug companies to ever embrace such a simple solution. Can a change in diet help a person suffering with emotional and psychological issues?
