Back-to-School Lunch-Packing Tips

With these tips and tricks, you can pack your kid’s lunches with meals that are equally fun, nutritious and delicious.

Sending your kids to school with a pocket full of lunch money may seem like the easy way out, but have you considered how unhealthy their cafeteria options are? Many schools follow lunch programs that are loaded with fat, salt and sugar, ultimately offering little to no nutritional benefit for your child.

The new school year is right around the corner, making it the perfect time to consider packing homemade healthy lunches this year. With these tips and tricks, you can pack your kid's lunches with meals that are equally fun, nutritious and delicious:

1. Keep the Essential Food Groups in Mind

    My 4 year old niece helped me make banana ice cream with my green star juicer with frozen bananas when she came to visit. I cooked frozen strawberries to thicken the juice from the strawberries, then cooled it down to room temperature. We put strawberries on top of the banana ice cream. She said it tasted as good as the local ice cream store that sells soft serve ice cream!

    When children help make the food, they are usually excited about eating it.

    I agree with Connie. When children are involved with the meal planning and preparation, they are more likely to not only eat the foods you pack for lunches, but actually enjoy them as well. The same holds true for meals eaten at home. Kids love getting involved. They can even help with picking out the fruit and veggies in the store or at the farmer’s market or produce stand.

  4. I love the suggestion of packing your own nutritious lunch for yourself and your children. My local farmer’s market is open from April through November. Even when it is closed, I can go the the city near me only a 30 minute drive and buy delicious food. The one in the big city is open all year! What a great idea to take your children along with you when you shop for groceries and let them be involved in that aspect too.

    This was some great information on packing school lunches. I think the primarily raw, plant-based diet consists of enzyme-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans and organic grains. This was a good statement. When I pack my grandkids lunch I do include fruit and cut vegetables like peppers and slice carrots and they love eating like that….We have learned to leave out the chips and cookies…lol Just trying to keep them focus on eating correct. Thanks again

  6. I agree. School cafeteria lunches are often loaded with fat, salt, sugar and very little nutrition.

    The challenge is to pack your child a homemade lunch that tastes delicious so he or she prefers it over the school lunch program.
