Some "health experts" have claimed that a glass of wine once a day can do the body good, but it's time to reconsider this advice, as recent research states otherwise. According to a new report released by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund, consuming one glass of wine or another alcoholic drink a day can increase one's risk for premenopausal breast cancer by 5 percent, and postmenopausal breast cancer by 9 percent.
Alcohol's Cancer Influence
Additionally, beyond limiting alcohol consumption, the researchers found that women who participated in vigorous activity like running or bicycling reduced their risk for both pre- and postmenopausal breast cancers. Ann McTiernan, Ph.D., the lead author of the report and cancer prevention expert at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research, said that this study's results can be a learning tool for women.
"With this comprehensive and up-to-date report the evidence is clear: Having a physically active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight throughout life and limiting alcohol – these are all steps women can take to lower their risk," she said.
Breast cancer isn't the only type of cancer caused by drinking alcohol, however. According to the National Cancer Institute, alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for the following types of the disease:
- Head and neck.
- Mouth and throat.
Research published in the American Journal of Public Health stated that nearly 3.2 to 3.7 percent of all U.S. cancer deaths were related to alcohol in 2013.
How Else Does Alcohol Impact Your Health?

- Impairs judgment and coordination.
