Do You Want To Know God?

What is the closest way to get to know God?

Spend time with a child.

We recently had the great pleasure to share a week with our 3-year-old granddaughter. Every morning she woke up with energy, smiles and that incredible laugh. Those bright, blue eyes and that deep, black hair that goes well down her back just pierced these grandparents with a new-found reason to get out of bed. Her vibrant smile coupled with that insatiable energy kept us trying to find more ways to show her a fun experience. Whether we were feeding gluten-free bread to the ducks, taking a ride on a kiddie train or teaching her what it is like to watch your car get washed from inside the vehicle, the look of awe and wonder on her face would abound. This of course, made grandpa and grandma take another look at the experience from her eyes. The twinkle in those bright, blue eyes as she received countless hours of personal attention coupled with that infectious giggle, just created boundless love and adoration from her grandparents. Our hearts are just bursting from the fulfilling experience we had with her.

Matthew 18:3 says,

“Truly I tell you," He said, "unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

That little girl brought new meaning to those words this week. She was uninhibited as she would break out into song throughout the day. She ran full speed into our arms demanding a hug and giving the sweetest kisses. We looked anew at the birds feeding in the bird feeder as she just watched and stared at them, talking all the time… It is as if the blinders have fallen and this little girl introduced us to the real beauty this world has to offer. The beauty isn’t in material possessions, it is in the simple, innocent gaze of a young child. Her unabashed look of love and joy can melt any hardened heart and through her gaze are all of the answers to those hard to understand questions or, the answers aren’t even needed.

Mark 10:15 says,“Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

What we found this week, as we watched the antics and movements of a little three-year-old, was likely just a glimpse of what Heaven must be like. It has inspired this grandma and grandpa to want to spend more time with young children to remember and experience the moments that can only be defined as “heavenly!” Life isn’t all about what you eat and what you drink. The true “fountain of youth” is keeping your heart from getting hard and the greatest antidote for that is opening up your heart to share it with someone else. By the way, the health benefits are amazing! Whether you are blessed with your own grandchildren or you become a “surrogate” grandparent, we highly recommend you spend time with little children. Not only will they learn the world through your teaching, but your eyes will certainly be widened as you experience the world from their perspective. It is definitely a life-changing, life-enhancing experience.
