In previous weeks, I have shared how Dr. Michael Donaldson, Research Director here at Hallelujah Acres, works to assure that we are teaching the most accurate and up-to-date information available. Today, however, we are going to talk about something we’ve known for a long time. Question: What is a vitamin that is not a vitamin at all, yet its absence can have an extremely negative effect upon the body? Answer: Vitamin D, the “sunshine” vitamin.

What You Need To Know About Vitamin D3

After God spent four days creating the heaven and the earth and making it a place capable of sustaining human life: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth…” (Genesis 1:1-19) God next creates that first human and plants a garden. There He places Adam. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.” (Genesis 2:7-8) Now prior to creating Adam, God had to create some things that were necessary for life on earth to be sustained. One of those items God had to create was the SUN to provide both light and warmth. “And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day , and the lesser light to rule the night : He made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:16-17) After God had created Adam in Genesis 2:7 and placed him in the garden in Genesis 2:8, “the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” (Genesis 2:18) And in Genesis 2:25 we learn how they were clothed: “And they were both naked, the man and his wife…”

But What Has All This Got To Do With Vitamin D?

Plenty! Sun exposure on the skin is God’s natural provision for vitamin D. He shone it on the garden some 6,000 years ago where Adam and Eve walked naked, devoid of all clothing, their body exposed daily to sunlight. But life has changed dramatically since then! Most people do not walk around devoid of clothing in the age in which we live. In fact, it is illegal to do so in virtually every part of the world. But God knew what He was doing. When He created Adam and Eve, he provided them no protection from the sunlight following their creation. Why? Because as we have recently learned, it is the UVB rays from the sun that provide the most effective, most reliable, most abundant, and most natural God-given source of Vitamin D. Vitamin D sufficiency, along with proper diet and exercise, have been shown to be the most important preventative factors in human health. Hundreds of studies link Vitamin D deficiency with significantly higher rates of many forms of cancer, as well as heart disease, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and numerous other diseases.

Sunlight Has Been Given A Bad Rap

For years we have been told by the established medical community that we must avoid the sun’s rays that God allowed to fall upon Adam and Eve’s body in the garden of Eden. They warn us that sun exposure can lead not only to skin cancer, but also cause premature aging of the skin (wrinkles), cataracts, and more. However, there is good evidence that sun exposure without burning actually decreases the potential of melanoma. It is important for everyone to understand that the dangers of sun exposure have been greatly exaggerated and the benefits of sun exposure greatly underestimated. Sadly, in so many instances, we learn after many people have been harmed by information presented as ‘expert advice’ that has proven to be just plain wrong. God designed the human body to receive daily exposure to the sun’s rays for numerous reasons. One of the most important is that t the sun provides the building materials our bodies need to produce Vitamin D, one of the most basic and important elements humans require in order to regain or maintain health. If you still believe the sun’s rays are dangerous, it is imperative that you re-evaluate your thinking. If you continue to hold incorrect negative beliefs about the sun and continue to refrain from allowing its rays to fall upon your body and nourish it, you could easily bring your life to an early end or needlessly experience numerous physical problems...problems that can be avoided if you allow yourself to be be exposed to the sun as God intended.

It Is Important To Avoid Sunburn

It is important that we allow the sun’s rays to fall upon our skin in order to obtain our Vitamin D. However it is also important that we not over-expose our bodies to the sun’s rays as this can be dangerous. This is especially important when we first expose our body to the sun’s rays at the beginning of the summer. This brings up an interesting point . Numerous people who sunburned very easily before adopting The Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle report that they find it almost impossible to sunburn after adopting it. My wife Rhonda is an example. Before adopting The Hallelujah Diet, she couldn’t spend even a small amount of time in the sun without developing severe blisters and, on occasion, sunstroke. But since being on The Hallelujah Diet, she sometimes spends the entire day in the sun helping me in the garden and she barely tans. What has made the difference in her body’s reaction to the sun? Her antioxidant levels. We have learned that the key factor in the cause of sunburn is a lack of sufficient antioxidants. Raw fruits and vegetables and especially vegetable juices and BarleyMax are loaded with antioxidants, while the Standard American cooked food Diet (SAD) is almost totally devoid of antioxidants. If you are a person who has previously allowed your skin limited access to the sun, next spring or summer it is suggested you begin exposure to the sun slowly. Ten to fifteen minutes a day is a good way to start. Then progressively increase your time in the sun over the next few weeks until you have a nice tan. Interestingly, while some medical experts warn people to avoid the sun in order to prevent melanoma cancer, there is good evidence that sun exposure without burning actually decreases the potential of melanoma.

Vitamin D Helps Protect The Body From Disease

Vitamin D is entirely different from all other vitamins. Technically, it is not a vitamin at all, but rather a prohormone (which enhances the strength of the hormone that already occurs in the body) your body produces from cholesterol (the good kind of cholesterol your body creates naturally). Receptors that respond to prohormones are found in every human cell, giving Vitamin D the power to affect the entire body When a person receives regular exposure to the UVB rays of the sun, the Vitamin D levels of the body are increased, Studies show that these increased levels of Vitamin D help protect the body from numerous diseases including:
  • Many types of cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Osteoporosis and even depression

Vitamin D Offers Protection Against The Flu

Recent studies show that Vitamin D plays a significant role in helping your immune system defend against infectious diseases like the flu. And because it is better and far safer than any flu vaccine man can create, Vitamin D offers superior protection. Have you ever noticed that it is only in the winter months these flu epidemics occur? Now we know why! In a March 2010 article for FoodConsumer.com, Dr. John Cannell, an American health activist and Director of the Vitamin D Council, reports that Vitamin D helps produce antibacterial peptides that help protect against the flu. (You can read the entire article here.) In the article, Dr. Cannell says this phenomenon explains why in winter, when there is little sunshine, people are more prone to Vitamin D deficiency, which in turn makes the body vulnerable to flu viruses. Vitamin D increases the body’s production of 200-300 different antimicrobial peptides. In addition to being far superior and effective in protecting you against the flu than any synthetic antibiotic or antiviral, Vitamin does so at a small fraction of the cost of man-made products. Lead researcher Carsten Geisler told Food Consumer, “When a T cell is exposed to a foreign pathogen, it extends a signaling device or ‘antenna’ known as a Vitamin D receptor, with which it searches for Vitamin D. If the T cells cannot find enough Vitamin D in the blood, they won’t even begin to mobilize.” This further illuminates why flu shots do not work. They do absolutely nothing to address the underlying cause which is a deficiency of Vitamin D. When the immune system is not working properly because of a Vitamin D deficiency, the toxins in the flu shot do additional damage to the immune system. Of even greater concern is that the side-effects from the flu shot have at times proven deadly. Dr. Russell Blaylock, a retired neurosurgeon and member of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeon. He says that if a senior citizen receives an annual flu shot for five consecutive years, they increase their potential of Alzheimer’s by 1000% because of the mercury in the vaccine. I have personally known three individuals who did not have the flu at the time of the flu vaccinations, but after receiving the vaccination died of the flu.

How Can We Strengthen Our Immune System?

The strength of our immune system is determined not by our doctor or some drug. Rather, the Creator gave us an immune system to protect us against germs, viruses and bacteria. But that God-given immune system can only function optimally when it is kept strong through proper diet and lifestyle. Suggestions for Building and Maintaining a Strong Immune System:
  • Adopt a 100%, mostly raw, plant-based diet (similar to The Hallelujah Diet) that includes lots of vegetable juices (and BarleyMax).
  • Remove all refined sugar from your diet because it is an immune system suppressant (Refined sugars and refined grains literally knock out or ‘void’ the immune system’s ability to protect the body from germs, viruses and bacteria.)
  • Aerobically exercise the body for 20 or more minutes at least three times a week, but preferably on a daily basis
  • Obtain adequate rest (7-8 hours nightly on a consistent basis)
  • Avoid stress as much as possible
  • If you are unable to obtain enough sunshine daily to produce adequate Vitamin D (which is practically impossible in Northern climates most of the year), take a daily Vitamin D3 supplement.
Rhonda and this editor take 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily nearly year round. (Children need 1,000 to 2,000 IU.) If you choose to supplement, make sure it is with Vitamin D3 and not with Vitamin D2 which does not offer the same protection. Vitamin D2 is a synthetic form of Vitamin D often prescribed by physicians and found in homogenized milk. It’s important to your health to strive to achieve blood levels with 50-80 ng/ml of Vitamin D. Keeping your level in this range, and even erring toward the higher numbers, will give a person the most protective benefit. You may find it helpful to invest in an inexpensive, vitamin D blood test.

Next week, the good Lord willing and if the creeks don’t rise too high, we will take a look at what Dr. Donaldson has discovered in research and what he has to say about the subject of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a nutrient that is vital to every person’s health but is too often lacking not only in a vegan diet, but equally in a person who consumes a meat-based diet. Trust you will join us!
