It must be autumn — dire warnings of West Nile Virus are all over the news again. But don't let the media hype scare you. You have to remember that reports of deaths due to the virus don't tell you anything else about the people who died. Were they already chronically sick from other diseases? Did they have a weak immune system due to poor diet and lifestyle habits? Take the hype with a grain of salt and remember that just like any other virus, a healthy immune system is your best defense, and adopting The Hallelujah Diet will help you build your immune system. Still, no one enjoys getting mosquito bites! And if you've got lemons on hand, you may not have to deal with them at all! Lemons can be used both to ward off mosquitoes and to remedy the situation if it's already too late. Much like the concept behind a citronella candle, lemons can be used in a mixture with garlic (which mosquitoes hate) as a homemade mosquito repellant:
  • Mince a few cloves of garlic and cover with olive oil (cited recipe uses mineral oil, but its safety is debated).
  • Allow it to sit for at least 24 hours.
  • Strain a teaspoon of the oil mixture with a sieve, mix with 2 cups water and 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  • Strain again with a cheesecloth to remove debris and pour into a spray bottle.
  • Shake before each use.
If you're already scratching from bites, soak a cotton ball in some freshly squeezed lemon juice and apply it to the affected area. The natural anti-inflammatory and anesthetic effects of lemon juice help relieve the itch and inflammation. What's your home remedy for mosquito bites?
